Lively and fun but also quiet and calm at night. Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal.
Does your business rank among the best in California?
We never encountered such a helpful friendly and funny dockside assistance Restaurant was very good along with the staff. And fun watching all the canal traffic. While Schaefer's Canal House is an awesome marina, they also have an amazing bar and restaurant attached to it that second to none.
Plan Your Trip
The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained. The current can be strong going into the fuel dock, so make sure when docking you approach against the current and have staff help grab your lines. Dockmaster was very helpful in getting us set-up at the dock and providing information on currents and departure times for the rest of the journey back through the Chesapeake Bay. Nice location with the restaurant and the dockmaster hours were very convenient for our 5p arrival. Only suggestion is to add showers to the facility.

Late-night food,
Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River. The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house.
Comfort food,

The development opened to much fanfare on July 4, 1905. Red Cars (trolleys) transported people from downtown to the beach. Current and pilings made for a rough night. The restaurant was lively and the food was good. As to the accommodations there is a substantial amount of current through the marina and the tidal change is roughly 3’. With the marina only offering pilings that makes it tough to position bumpers for cushioning as the shifting current bounces the boat around.
Explore Maryland
Enjoyed the bike trail and restaurant accommodations. Dock crew were very accommodating. The docks and power were very new and more than adequate.
Venice Canals in Los Angeles: The Complete Guide

Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.
Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide. By the 1950s, Venice had become known as the "slum by the sea." The canals were in a state of disrepair, and the area was considered undesirable. It wasn't until the 1990s that the city funded a restoration project.
Easy access to water hose and electric hookup. The only draw-back is that there are no showers. Even a cold water outside rinse off shower would have been nice. Nice folks running the docks (inc their staff).
We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you.
A good starting point is at the corner of Washington and Strongs Drive, where a sign marks the enclave’s entrance. There are no official boat rentals, but there is a public boat launch open from 9 am to 6 pm for non-motorized watercraft. Steve and his team provide an excellent experience. The location is great and we got to see the swapping of pilots on a vehicle carrier ship right from our boat. Good spot for waiting on the current and getting a great meal at the restaurant.
I recommend using this marina when passing thru the C & D Canal. The marina staff were excellent in all phases, approach and tie up was easy, and everyone respected the no wake zone so there was minimal rocking. The Venice Canals were built in 1905 by Abbot Kinney, a developer who wanted to create a replica of Venice, Italy, in California. Kinney's vision was to create a network of canals, complete with gondolas, bridges, and beautiful houses. They were designed to drain the marshes and wetlands that existed in the area. After traveling from the East Coast to San Francisco, Kinney found his way to what is now known as Venice Beach, California.
Good dinner at the restaurant. Restaurant is good and convenient. Currents not a significant issue when taken bow first.
Restaurant next to dock was excellent. Not sure if there was a 'go fast' boat convention in town, but the exhaust noise from noon 'til dark was really ridiculous. Lively place with live music over the weekend.
At the end of the block, carefully jaywalk across Pacific Avenue. Follow the path on the other side of the street past the very large, very modern, high tech house with big windows for a few yards until you reach the first of six canals. Your best option in this neighborhood is the centrally located Hotel Erwin. With its funky décor, rooftop lounge and ocean views, this property puts you right in the thick of it all and is within walking distance of the canals. You can also score a package with surf lessons. Venice Beach Walking Tours offers organized strolls, but the area is easily self-guided.
